Important Citrus Update for House of Flavours Customers

The team at House of Flavours are keen to make our valued customers aware of potential difficulties looming within the trade of Citrus oil and flavourings.

Major citrus growing regions in Florida were recently affected by Hurricane Irma which devastated much of the crop over 2 days in September, as well as a series of natural disasters covering other regions.

How much of the crop was lost?

Many trees were damaged in the Florida region, but so far exact figures haven’t been confirmed.

Losses have been mentioned for crops of Oranges, ranging from between 30 and 80 percent.

Is it only Florida which is affected?

No, Mexico and the surrounding area was also affected by hurricanes and an earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale.

Is it just Orange and Grapefruit that is a concern?

No, we are currently seeing stocks decreasing and prices rising across a range of Citrus. Not only Orange, but also Grapefruit, Lemon and other citrus varieties.

I don’t buy Citrus crops from these areas, so why do I need to know?

Although citrus crops in Florida and the surrounding areas are directly affected by these unfortunate natural disasters. It has caused a knock on effect to the other global citrus growing regions. Meaning the likes of Argentinian Lemon oils and Brazilian Orange oils are been put under immense supply and demand pressure causing rising costs.

What can we do?

The team at House of Flavours are working closely with our global contacts to provide the best possible ongoing quality, service, and continuity of supply.

In the mean-time we would strongly advise customers to look at future possible needs and forecasts with regard to the use of citrus.

It is advisable that customers seek to secure contracts with us, so that we can try to ensure demand and supply to keep things running as smoothly as possible.

Due to the unstable market we are seeing increases across the board.
